    • Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Well and pipeline

    About the settlement

Nakivale's topography and size make the provision and distribution of water a major challenge. UNHCR's minimum standard for water is to supply 20 litres/person/day. Refugees in Nakivale receive an average of 14 litres/person/day with those in outlying areas receiving only 10 litres/person/day. The average walk to water is 2 kilometres, against a UNHCR standard of 200 metres. Some refugees travel up to 5 kilometres for water. Those who resort to drinking untreated water from the nearby lake suffer a high incidence of water-borne diseases and parasitic infections. There have been numerous outbreaks of cholera, the most recent in 2009.

Water is currently pumped from the nearby lake via four purification plants to central water collection points around the settlement. With the help of funding from Thankyou Water and other Australian donors UNHCR has recently supplemented this supply through the installation of boreholes, shallow wells and rainwater tanks in Nakivale's outlying 'villages'. Water continues to be trucked in tankers to those areas of the settlement with no safe water supply.

    • *In some cases, due to socio-political issues in Myanmar, specific village locations where Thankyou Water projects are currently being funded cannot be disclosed. In these instances, we have done our best to provide our Thankyou Water customers with region specific GPS co-ordinates. As a result, some villages may share the same GPS co-ordinates, as the information is based upon the regions rather than specific village locations. While Thankyou Water understands the need to remain accountable and transparent to our customers, we also identify that in some extreme cases (where social and political factors are out of our control) it may not always be possible. In these instances, we will always do our best to communicate and share this information with our customers and find alternative solutions where we can.

    • Classified Village Locations, 8 Wells 1600

    Why Classified?

The reason for the classification of this project is due to current social and political issues in Sri Lanka.

Decades of civil war in Sri Lanka, especially in the country’s northern regions, have damaged the infrastructure of towns and cities within particular regions, resulting in a lack of access to food, water and shelter.

Even though the war has ended, survivors have been forced to resettle in damaged towns where there is little or no access to safe water.

Since many of the beneficiaries of the water projects are war survivors returning back to their homes, Thankyou Water has a responsibility to protect their safety and therefore will not release names of the villages.

By being protected in this way, our beneficiaries have a greater chance to rebuild a better life for themselves and their families.
While Thankyou Water will always seek to remain transparent, open and accountable to our drinkers and supporters (hence the publishing of GPS co-ordinates), we will refrain from publishing the specific locations of our water solutions if there is a risk of the lives of our beneficiaries being endangered.
